Lesson ideas

Edmodo (www.edmodo.com) is a great way of engaging your students in socratic discussion on the effects of social networking.

Edmodo is a FREE 'Social Networking' environment for students, partents and teachers. It provides a safe and easy way for your class to connect and collaborate and, as Edmodo is very similar in layout and functionality to Facebook, it is immediately appealing to students.

Lesson Suggestion:

1. Start the lesson by showing your students the two starter videos above.
2. Ask students to list the benefits of social networking tools such as Facebook, twitter etc. (Review answers)
3. Instruct students to sign in to edmodo.com
4. Instruct students to watch "Social Networking - A good thing / bad thing" videos and then share their thoughts in the Edmodo group.
5. Show students "Orange Digital Dirt Video" - Discuss with students the message in the video.
6. Create a poll in Edmodo. Ask students to guess what percentage of college admission officers check applicants social network profiles then reply with the answer. (A. 20% B. 40% C. 60% D. 80% - Answer D. 80%). Discuss with students whether they think this practice should be part of the application process.
7. Show students "Fakebook Profile". Ask students to list the things Justin has done "right" and what he has done "wrong".
8. Ask students to create their own Fakebook page (using Publisher or Word etc.) with rules for using social networking.
